"Help to Buy was the best gift I had last year, we wouldn’t have got a house without it, it's definitely one of the most important things that happened last year, getting the confirmation from help to buy.
We wouldn’t be in this position if it wasn’t for Help to Buy."

We recently visited Hull to speak with one of our recent buyers of Help to Buy.

Heather Roberts, 24 and her boyfriend Tom met whilst studying Public Service Management. After University, Tom who is originally from Peterborough decided to join Heather in her hometown Hull where Tom found a job as a design engineer and Heather, a PA.

The couple moved in with Heather’s parents before renting a small two bedroom apartment.

“We stayed with my parents for around 6 months which was not practical, especially after having so much independence at university.”

“We were able to get a three bedroom home through Help to Buy. We have both moved every year for the last 5 years so we wanted somewhere we could settle.”

“We bought an Oak Hurst, 3 bedroom House. The third room is an attic conversion so there is an ensuite there. We walked in the show room and totally fell in love. There is an office space that is great because Tom some times works from home, so we don’t have to use the bedrooms as an office space. Tom’s family also come up and visit so it’s nice that there is some where for them now to stay.”

“Me and Tom looked at the show homes here and we fell in love with this house instantly. He then went to work and I spent the day with my parents look around houses that we had made appointments to look at and we realised we were comparing the other houses to this one.”

“The next day Tom and I went into the office and they have mortgage brokers that you can talk to, we were able to know whether we could borrow it there and then.”

Scholars gate has been built where a school used to be; Heather expressed her surprise when she realized that it was the school her Uncle used to go.

“My uncle went to the school that was here. He said I heard you bought a house and I said yeah, where you went to school and he was like what! They’ve kept the street names the same, which is nice. They’ve kept that heritage from local places which is great.”

“I had heard about Help to Buy for a while but I had not realised about the 25% loan from the government, I had heard about the 5% deposit but I started looking into it properly.”

The Help to Buy Equity Loan is designed to help to you buy a new build home up to the value of £600,000. An equity loan between 10-20% is available to make your purchase more affordable, and you will only need a 5% deposit.

“Its fantastic, our Mortgage broker said that a lot of people do use it, it’s a way to get your own home. When we received the information, it was all broken down into year and year by what would happen. We never had any questions because all the information was there. We wouldn’t have got a house without it, it’s made a real big difference.”
