Young couple buys dream home thanks to Help to Buy

Gaynor Wyard & Ashley Shaw

Gaynor Wyard and Ashley Shaw are a young couple who had big dreams of owning their own home and at the tender age of 23 and 24 they achieved their dream thanks to Help to Buy.

24 year old Gaynor, originally from Featherstone is a teaching assistant at a school in Leeds and her 23 year old boyfriend Ashley Shaw from Knottingley, works up the road from their new home at a packaging company.

“Before we bought our new home we both lived separately with our own parents, so this is the first time we have lived together.”

Gaynor and Ashley bought a Rosas, a 4 bedroom mid terraced home on Strata’s Origin development in Featherstone for £155,000.

“We started looking at developments in the area and we fell in love with the ones on this development and we went to enquire about reserving.”

“We weren’t really enquiring with the intention of buying one straight away but then we were told that there were only 2 plots left.”

“We needed to reserve quite quickly after enquiring as we would have had to wait for the next phase on the development which wasn’t going to be available until the end of this year and we didn’t want to wait that long. We reserved a week after initially seeing the house, so it was very quick!”

Help to Buy is available on new build developments. The scheme means that buyers can put as little as a 5% deposit down and receive a 20% Equity Loan from the government which is interest free for the first 5 years. This means you will have to get a mortgage for 75% from a participating provider.

“We always wanted a new build. We didn’t want anything older as there would be maintenance and repair costs involved and we just wanted to move in to a finished house.”

“We first heard about Help to Buy when we went to view the properties on the development. Alison from Strata’s sales office went through it with us before we even said we wanted to buy, she just wanted to give us an overview of what help was available to us.”

“We didn’t know what to make of the scheme initially because we thought it was too good to be true, but the more we heard about it and the more we researched in to it, we knew that the scheme was perfect for us.”

“Our move in day was great. We had the keys by 10am, we signed some documents and by 10:30am we’d unlocked the door and we were moving in.”

“The first thing we did when we moved in to our new home was get all the furniture in. It really was all systems go.”

“We were quite lucky because we both lived with parents, there wasn’t a real rush to move in once we got the keys. We got the house kitted out properly so we could move in to a fully furnished and decorated house!”

“We haven’t had a house warming party yet because we’re scared to have one. Everything is cream! Ashley really wants one but we’re still a bit apprehensive so we’re just going to wait a bit.”

“Help to Buy has opened more doors for us. It’s allowed us to get on the property ladder. Without it, we wouldn’t have been able to buy this amazing house.”

“It’s allowed us to buy something a lot better than we expected.”
