How to: reduce your household water usage

May 2016

There are so many ways to save money on your bills each year without going to extreme lengths. We’ve created this list of top tips that you can easily fit in to your current lifestyle without feeling like you’re changing everything you do.

Top tip #1

Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth. Believe it or not, you can save around 6 litres of water per minute. If you have a household of 4 people who brush their teeth twice a day for 2 minutes a time, you could save 48 litres of water a day and over a year, a massive 17,472 litres!

Top tip #2

Always uses full loads in your washing machine and dishwasher. If you plan your washing days carefully, you’ll be able to cut out unnecessary washes in between.

Top tip #3

Water your garden with a watering can rather than a hosepipe, which use 1,000 litres of water an hour. Mulching your plants (with bark chippings, heavy compost or straw) and watering in the early morning and late afternoon will reduce evaporation and also save water.

Top tip #4

If you haven’t got one already, install a water meter. When you’re paying your utility provider for exactly how much water you use, there is more incentive to waste less water. It will also allow you to see where you use most water. For instance, if you like a long shower but your bill is really high, you could try to cut the time you take when showering.

Top tip #5

Invest in a water filter, not only will your water be cold and filtered, you won’t have to leave the cold tap running when you’re making a drink. You can pick these up from a range of different stores for a range of prices depending on what you are looking for.
