City of York Council Shared Ownership programme

May 2019

If you're wanting to buy a new home in York, City of York Council offer a unique programme to help you step on the property ladder. Keep reading to find out more!

The Shared Ownership programme run by the City of York Council was launched in 2018 and is a very unique programme. Customers are able to choose their own property from the open market giving greater choice and flexibility. Customers are therefore not just limited to new build properties but any age, type of property.

As always customers do need to have been approved by Help to Buy, the same criteria for shared ownership eligibility applies.

Once a customer has identified a property the council will check to make sure that there are no obvious structural issues and if not will place an offer to the estate agent for the property.

The council will purchase the property and sell a share onto the customer on the same day via a back to back sale. Rent will be paid direct to the council on the unsold share.

The programme has proved to be extremely successful and already we have customers living in homes that they have chosen. It has been very successful with key workers allowing them to live and work in a city which commands high rent and sales values.

All applications are welcomed and we can be contacted on York 01904 552621 or sharedownership@york.gov.uk
