Top tips on spring cleaning

March 2016

It’s that time of year again - Christmas is behind us, the days are getting longer and the daffodils are beginning to bloom.

With a new season fast approaching, now is the perfect opportunity for a spring clean to refresh and declutter your home after the winter months. However, it can often seem like a daunting task, so with this in mind, Sam Wood, Sales Director at Barratt Homes Yorkshire West, offers her top tips to make sure your spring clean is as easy and enjoyable as possible.

1. Prepare in advance

Set aside a weekend some time in advance. Put it in your diary and try not to make any other commitments for that time. Try to make a list of all of the cleaning products you might need so that you won’t have to waste time running to the shop on the day for extra hoover bags! Get up early on both days so that you can do as much as possible and you’ll have a beautiful, de-cluttered, fresh, clean home by Sunday evening.

2. Make a list of the rooms that need cleaning

Making a list of all of the rooms in your house and all the jobs that need to be done in them will make the cleaning seem much more manageable. It breaks the job down into smaller chunks that you can tick off as you go along, giving you a sense of accomplishment. It will also give you a much clearer idea of how much there is to do at the outset. It might also ensure that you give each room a proper deep clean and don’t skip over the smaller tasks that can be overlooked when assessing the house as a whole.

3. Invite your friends round!

You don’t have to tackle it alone! Having company while you clean will not only make the whole process feel much quicker, it will also be much more fun! An incentive for your friends like making coffee and cake could even entice them to help you clean – if you promise to return the favour! Make it fun – for example, a motivational playlist will help lift the mood!

4. Motivational pictures

Social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest can provide fantastic inspiration for a de-clutter and offer great motivation to get you cleaning. You can also share your own before and after pictures on social media to feel a sense of accomplishment and pride in your new refreshed home.

5. Consider reorganising your possessions

The cleaning process is a fantastic time to reconsider where you keep everything. When you’re cleaning, you might realise you’re not using the space in your home as efficiently as possible. Reorganising will help give your house a new, updated look that will make the end result even more noticeable.

6. Reward yourself!

A small reward for your hard work will really help motive you. You could plan a special evening out or invite family round to your spotless home! Alternatively, you might feel a new piece of furniture or some new bed linen will really put the finishing touch to your revitalised, clean and tidy home.
